CLAY
Ceramics: things made from clay that has been heated to the proper temperature and is made permanent.
Clay is mud… it can be found on riverbanks or near a stream that is thick and has flexible properties. There are many different types of clay and it comes in all sorts of colors. It is made up of decaying plants, water, mud, & grog.
CLAY: Is a moist earth of decomposed rock; used in products such as pottery, bricks, tiles, and sculpture. It is fine grained earth from the soil.

KILN: A type of oven capable of reaching extremely high temperatures. Fires the clay to the correct hardness.

Kiln
KILN: A type of oven capable of reaching extremely high temperatures. Fires the clay to the correct hardness.
WEDGE: This is the process of removing air pockets from the clay. The clay is thrown down on a table, and gently turned and kneaded.
KNEADING: is the process of wedging clay where you press the air bubbles out of the clay. Two ways we practice in studio are called “Rams Head” and “Ice Cream Cone”. They are called this because they look like the objects when you are finished if done properly.

CENTERING: This is the process used to ensure that the clay revolves in the exact center of the wheelhead prior to throwing.

BAT: Is a circular disk used to create pottery on the wheel. It protects the artists hands from lug nuts and makes it easier to throw pieces and remove them with out distorting the pot.
