We are starting our work on coils by the end of the week. To prepare, sketch out a few ideas based on the myth you have created or a traditional one you have altered or connected with. Focus on simple images that will represent main ideas or events the happen with the story. Write out the story as it will be included alongside your finished art piece. There is no need for a long story, keep it short and simple. Type out your story on a google doc so you are ready to share it with your audience once your art work is completed. You will design your decorations around this story to include decorative bands and highlights to the myth with your sketches. The three choices you have to create your coil vessel are: Bowl, Vase, or Cylinder... if you add a lid then it will become a jar. Your final grade will be based on your selection of shape and the level of difficulty in not only design but overall construction. I have included a few examples to help you with your brainstorming. Cultures from all over the world embellish or decorate work that tells a story, some traditional like the Greek, Egyptian and Roman, some more contemporary like Native American pieces. Above are some examples of stories that have been painted or carved in to the surface of vases, bowls, and bottles.
In Studio...
This week we will be in the mud room working on your projects you designed and planned on. We will be learning how to read a textbook this week and start learning about clay and its history. You will need to upload photos to your jamboard if you haven't already. We will learn how to take photos and use the Photo Box. I want you to learn how to best use the jamboard to showcase what you are working on as well as take advantage of the features of the application.
In studio... Watch the video and take your time in designing your piece. Make sure to take pictures as you go with your computer to have evidence of your work. Be creative and sketch any changes you may have. If you need to let items dry a bit, start to work on your coil vessel. Don't be afraid to add color and value to your sketch.
Take time to learn about clay drying stages, the ingredients of clay, and drying rates will be introduced and we will try an experiment in clay evaporation. We will organize our sketchbook journals and design the covers. |
